Willan and Waddington star with bat.

Rain greeted the start of the return fixtures as the 2nd team arrived at the picturesque local venue know as Cosby Park. A long delay until 14.50 and a 32 over game. A good toss to win and the home side were inserted by the jubilant away skipper.

Opening for the home side Bell and niffy Favourite Pople. For the away side the emerging partnership of Looms and Coulson. A tight start was required and the 2 veterans found a decent line and length. Coulson claiming the prize wicket of Pople bowled for 8. Taylor replacing Looms. Taylor bowling Meredith for 2. Coulson finishing a fine tight spell of 6 overs replaced by Waddington.

Drinks taken at 17 overs and the score 68 for 2. Taylor replaced by Page S from “ the playground end”. Waddington bowling a tight line while Page S sent down a mixed bag. Run rate now starting to rise with wickets in hand. Bell looking to anchor the innings and Suffolk playing more freely. Suffolk removed caught and bowled by Waddington for a well played 31. 85 for 3 20 overs bowled.

Whitehead came and went LBW to Page S for 5. Larke now joined Bell looking to increase the rate. Waddington completing his 8 over spell considering just 31. Wale taking over from Page S and Looms bowling the remaining 2 overs from “the poop bin end”. Bell and Larke finding the boundary well. Inning closed 160 for 4. Bell a fine 64no and Larke 33no.

A quick half time chat and the 2s enjoyed a decent tea. Page M and Smith to open. A steady start required. Both started well until Smith was removed by Roberts caught by Sharpe. 42 for 1 11 overs bowled. Parrish in at 3. Innings building nicely. Page M finding the boundary well and running hard. Parrish removed by Roberts for 8. Enter Willan H.

Ex Countesthorpe star Sharpe M now in the home skippers ear. “he can smack it skip, better put some sweepers out”. This advice fell on deaf ears. Willan lofting 4,6 to start his innings. Page M removed bowled for a solid 35. 93 for 3 21 overs bowled. Megginson the new man to the crease. Willan now finding the leg side boundary Bell was removed from the attack and replace by Sharpe M.

The game in the balance. Roberts finishing a decent spell of 8 overs costing just 22. Something had to give. Megginson lofting Sharpe for a maximum only for the bowler to gain revenge shortly after via the safe hands of Green. 100 for 4. Wale joined the not out batsmen. A partnership required to lead the boys home. Steady stuff with 27 taken from 7 overs. Willan bowled by Hunter for 39. Waddington now in at 7 with instructions to get on with it. 136 for 5. 29 overs bowled. Wale Bowled by Sharpe for 16. Page S joined Waddington. 24 required from 18 balls.

Waddington through the covers for 4. Followed by a huge 6 over square leg. 7 required from the last over. Could Young Sharpe hold his nerve? A single 1st ball. 2 2nd ball followed by a dot. Page S knowing that surely this young spin bowler would drop short. Sure enough a cut to the boundary for 3. Scores now level. Field closes in. Waddington dot. Final ball and a single taken. Waddington punches the air with delight.

A fine run chase by the batsmen after a slightly disappointing effort by the bowlers. The day ended with a satisfying drink back at Bassett Ave.

Man of the match. Waddington.
