Niffy go from rags to riches...well almost

A fluctuating match, which saw Niffy climb from the depths of 38 for 5, to what looked like a 'certain' victory, only for the Ashby batsman to hold out and escape with a draw.
It all started so well, with Degs and Will putting on 29 for the first wicket, before Calver switched ends and broke the opening partnership, and then the skipper in the same over. The score had progressed to 38, before 3 wickets fell in seven balls, and Niffy were in trouble.
At this point, Toony joined Hayden. A lively partnership ensued, with Hayden hitting sixes into the garden of 29 Bassett Avenue, and a Toon pull almost ending up in the allotments. A run out seemed the most likely way of separating them, on a couple of occasions the Ashby fielders were unable to benefit from an impromptu mid wicket conversation, which was probably not about the weather or the talent at the Junior Presentation night.
Simon Jeffcott, in possibly his last innings at Bassett Avenue, hit some lusty blows, and a score of 186 seemed well above par on a slow and dusty wicket, where the bounce was sometimes very low.
Ashby got off to a slow start, and though they had 48 overs to chase, they never really looked like getting them. Simon broke the opening partnership with a caught and bowled, before Toony struck..taking three wickets in his first three overs for no runs, the last thanks to an amazing running catch by Karl, who travelled at least 50 yards before safely pouching it.
The eighth wicket pair held on, but a satisfying winning draw and 15 points was the outcome.
