Countesthorpe Cricket Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our Life Member, John Dupey.
John first played for Countesthorpe as a 12-year-old in 1958, when the club, then known as Countesthorpe Wanderers, played on Ward's Field, the site now occupied by Mull Way and Arran Way. As such, John was part of the club even before the move to Bassett Avenue and remained at the heart of Countesthorpe Cricket Club for almost seven decades.
A respected player and leader, John was club captain in 1990 and 1991 before serving as Second XI captain for the following four seasons. Club records show that, from 1973 onwards, he played over 250 First XI league matches and took almost 300 wickets. His best bowling performance came against Ashby Road Sports, where he claimed figures of 6 for 27.
John's contribution away from the playing field was equally significant. He joined the committee in 1972 and became heavily involved in the social side of the club, organising entertainment and club dinners. In 2014 he was elected President, a position he held until 2023, and he was instrumental in establishing President's Day as one of the club's most important annual events.
Few members have given as much time and effort to Countesthorpe Cricket Club as John. Having begun his working life on Dick Eales' farm, where he developed both the skills and affection for maintaining the club's grounds. He took great pride in looking after the outfields at both Bassett Avenue and later Gilmorton, often behind the wheel of the club tractor.
There seemed to be no task that John was unwilling to tackle. Whether helping to build the clubhouse, trimming hedges around the ground, digging trenches for electrical cables or taking on countless other jobs, he was always ready to lend a hand.
John was always a familiar face, a dedicated volunteer, a loyal supporter and a friend to generations of players and members.
The club is enormously grateful for everything John gave over so many years. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with John's family and friends at this difficult time.
John’s funeral will be held on Friday 23rd October 3pm at Countesthorpe Crematorium.
Rest in peace John
